For generations, families in Thu Sy have woven bamboo into traditional fishing equipment used in the rice fields, ponds, and waterways of northern Vietnam. Locally known as lo, these distinctive woven forms are part of a rural culture closely connected to fishing, farming, and life in the Red River Delta.
Craft, People & Visual Storytelling
The photographic story of Thu Sy extends beyond the finished bamboo baskets. Hands splitting and weaving bamboo, artisans working inside old houses and courtyards, environmental portraits, repeating geometric forms, and the relationship between people and handmade objects all provide different layers for visual storytelling.
The tour combines observation of everyday village life with carefully arranged access to local artisans and their working environments. You can work through wider establishing photographs, environmental portraits, working moments, gestures, details, textures, and graphic compositions to create a more complete story of the craft and the people who continue to practice it.
Photography & Video
The experience is suitable for still photography, video, travel and editorial assignments, and personal visual storytelling projects. Your photographer-guide can assist with local communication, access, composition, available light, camera settings, and understanding the craft while giving you space to develop your own interpretation.
A professional camera is not required. Mirrorless and DSLR cameras, compact cameras, and smartphones are all suitable. Wide and standard focal lengths work particularly well for photographing artisans within their surroundings and exploring the graphic forms and repeating patterns of the woven bamboo. A tripod is not required.
