Fishing has shaped everyday life along the rivers and coastal waterways around Hoi An for generations. Nets are made and repaired by hand, boats move between villages and fishing grounds, and large traditional lift nets remain one of the most distinctive features of the local waterscape. Together, these elements provide a visual story connecting people, craft, movement, and the environment.

Fishing Nets & Village Life

Photograph local people making and repairing fishing nets, working hands, environmental portraits, boats, fishing equipment, and details of everyday life around the village. Threads, gestures, textures, and layers of netting create opportunities for both observational photography and more graphic compositions.

Much of this part of the tour follows a documentary approach, observing people and working processes as they unfold. Selected opportunities may also be arranged with local participants to explore the visual relationship between people, nets, light, and their working environment.

Traditional Lift Nets

The second visual highlight is Hoi An's traditional lift nets, known locally as ro. Suspended from large bamboo structures above the water, these nets are lowered and raised as part of a fishing method long associated with the rivers and waterways of central Vietnam.

The scale and geometry of the lift nets create a very different photographic environment from the intimate scenes of the village. Depending on conditions and local activity, photograph the nets within the wider riverscape, fishermen working around them, boats passing through the scene, and the interaction between human figures, bamboo structures, water, and changing light.

Documentary & Visual Storytelling

This tour combines observation of real fishing communities with selected opportunities for more interpretive visual storytelling. The aim is not simply to return with one signature photograph, but to explore different layers of the story through establishing images, environmental portraits, working moments, gestures, details, patterns, and wider landscapes.

Your photographer-guide can assist with local communication, access, composition, camera settings, working with available light, and understanding the activities taking place while giving you freedom to develop your own photographic approach.

Photography & Video

The experience is suitable for still photography, video, travel and editorial assignments, and personal visual storytelling projects. A professional camera is not required; mirrorless and DSLR cameras, compact cameras, and smartphones are all suitable.

A standard zoom works well for village photography, while wider focal lengths are useful for environmental scenes involving the large lift-net structures. A short telephoto can help isolate people, gestures, boats, and details. A tripod is not required.
